LJB/LGH Blood Drive is a Huge Success!

Thank You to all of the individuals who donated their time and blood for the LJB's/LGH Blood Drive. We had approximately 80 potential donors for this great cause. A special thanks goes out to the Lancaster Barnstormers and their Upper Management Team for allowing us to use the Wheatland Suite of Clipper Magazine Stadium and another special thank you to Amy Welsh, the LGH Blood Donor Recruiter.

Did you know what all is involved with a blood drive? Let me try to give you an idea of what all goes into that unit of blood. (I am sure I will miss a few things). You need people to organize blood drives, set them up, take the blood, bags for the blood, people to transport the blood back to the blood center, people to separate the blood into 3 different components (red blood cells, plasma, platelets), equipment to do this, places to store the products (refrigerators, freezers, platelet rotators), testing (ABORh typing, screening for HIV/hepatitis, syphilis and many other things), people to label the blood, pack it up in boxes to be shipped to hospitals, and drivers to transport the blood.
At the hospital: people to test the blood to ensure compatibility with the patient, refrigerators/freezers/platelet rotators to store the products, people to prepare the product (plasma must be thawed, platelets pooled, etc.), doctors to order the blood, nurses to transfuse the blood (sorry, I don't know too much about this end of things).

I have left out many steps in the process but you get the idea. It's a very complicated process none of which would be possible without the generosity of the blood donor.

Again, Thank You to everyone involved!!

Haiti Clothing and Food Drive...

The Lancaster Junior Barnstormers in conjunction with Welsh Mountain Health Centers http://www.welshmountain.com/Fact%20Sheet%2009.pdf are collecting used clothes, non-perishable foods and other items to make hygiene kits.  The kits are going to have items like toothpaste, soap, washcloths, bath towels, nail clippers, nail files, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant (non aerosol), comb/brush and handkerchief.  Each kit will be the items wrapped in the bath towel with a safety pin!  That's where the boys will be most helpful! We are going to be shipping via Christian Aid Ministries; some other items may go with one of the Dr.'s in the community. We also have a business within our organization that will assist with shipping costs of items not sent by Christian Ministries.

Anyone willing to donate any items or your sons time, please contact Sandy Mcshane @ (717) 286-3427 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Tip of the Week
From the Stretch.....
Written by Larry Hess

When pitching with runners on base, you've got to deliver the baseball to the plate in 1.3 seconds or less from the set position.

Why 1.3?

Let's do some simple math: Quick base runners can usually swipe a bag in under four seconds. A catcher can usually receive the ball and make a throw to second base (also known as a catcher's "POP time") in roughly two seconds.

1.3 + 2.0 = 3.3

4 - 3.3 = 0.7

This gives either your catcher or your teammate covering second base a 0.7 second margin of error. And to throw good runners out, every tenth of a second counts.
