Fall 2010 - Summer 2011 Tryouts

The Fall 2010 - Summer 2011 Tryouts for the 10U through 15U teams will be on August 14th, 2010 at 8am at Hempfield High School. A players age is based on his age on April 30, 2011. (Players considered to be 9U are welcome to tryout, too! 16U and 18U tryout dates are still TBD.) Past tryouts have ended between noon and 2pm. All players should register online (check back here for a link to the registration site in the next couple days). Tryouts cost $25 per player, and that fee can be paid via cash or check during check-in at the tryout.

Players should check-in at the Hempfield High School Varsity Baseball Field on the 14th between 7:30 and 7:45am and bring their baseball equipment (cleats, glove, bat, etc.) as well as plenty to drink to stay hydrated. It is not uncommon for tryouts to extend into the early afternoon, so bringing a snack might also be appropriate.

The Lancaster Junior Barnstormers provide high quality instruction to field competitive teams with numerous championships earned at Sports at the Beach, Ripken Baseball, Triple Crown, Cooperstown Dreams Park, ECTB and Future Stars tournaments. We also strive to make each player a well-rounded person through community service projects including Lancaster General Hospital blood drives, clothing/food collections for natural disaster victims, Christmas gift collections for underprivileged children, etc.

The Lancaster Junior Barnstormers want to make high quality tournament baseball as affordable as possible while providing great opportunities for baseball players! The fee for the 2010-2011 season will be $850 per player. That fee includes all insurance fees, two uniforms, tournament registration fees, outdoor facilities and indoor facilities. For your convenience, an installment payment plan will be available.

NEW THIS YEAR: The fee also includes a one-year membership to the Lanco Fieldhouse baseball facilities, which includes batting cages, pitching lanes, soft-toss/tee stations, and a large open area for drills, groundball practice, etc. (Our fee for a one-year membership alone is an exceptional value when compared to other indoor baseball facilities.)

FOR RETURNING PLAYERS: Please note that in previous years we operated on a "pay as you go" plan (registration fee, uniform purchase, indoor workout costs, etc.). This year's single fee (a) includes those items, (b) is equal to or less than last year's fees, and (c) includes an unlimited membership to the Lanco Fieldhouse's baseball facilities.

12U Red Rules at Ripken

The LJB 12U Red team overcame extreme heat and storms this past weekend to take home the Ripken High Heat Classic Championship. They had a record of 5-0 while giving up a total of 18 runs and scoring 54. This is their 3rd tournament Championship this season!

10U Red - Another Tournament Title

The 10U Red team wrapped up its spring/summer season with another tournament championship! This weekend's (July 24-25) Blue Mountain Battle FSTB tournament in Hershey was shortened to a one-day event due to severe thunderstorms, but the team came out with blazing bats on Saturday to outscore their opponents 24 to 3! Their performance on Saturday gave them the number one seed out of ten teams and ultimately the tournament title. The 10U Red team earned two first place finishes and two second place finishes this year...not bad for a group of nine and ten year-olds who never played tournament baseball before this year! Congratulations!

15U Red - The Elite of the Elite

Congratulations to the 15U Red team on another tournament title! On July 17-18 they battled in the Elite Baseball Showcase and came out on top. Even more impressive is that this tournament was open to 16U teams...congratulations guys!

10U Red Takes the SWS Wooden Bat Championship

The 10U team combined a potent offense with a solid defensive and pitching performance to go 3-0 and win the SWS Wooden Bat title! Using wooden bats was a great experience, but seeing how the balls were flying, there wasn't much of an adjustment necessary...congratulations boys!

Take a look at a few photos from the tournament...

Tip of the Week
Fastball-Slider Pitchers......
Written by Larry Hess

If you're a fastball-slider pitcher then this article may be helpful.

As you know, the slider is a great pitch. It comes in harder (more velocity) than a traditional curveball, and breaks later.

Those two factors make it tough to hit.

But not always.

That's why I teach my fastball-slider guys to avoid throwing the pitch to hitters with long swings. Against those types of hitters, a straight fastball middle to middle-in is a much better pitch.

That's because hitters who have long swings tend to have slow bats (unless they guess the pitch correctly).

For them to get the head of the bat out in front of the baseball to drive it off the "sweet spot" of the bat, they need a pitch moving at less-than-full velocity, and out from in on their hands. That, of course, is how sliders move and where most pitchers place it.

Many long-swinging hitters can't catch up to the fastball inside. Unless they "cheat," start their hands early, or guess fastball, they cannot handle inside heat -- their hands are too slow to the ball.

If you establish the inner half with a fastball as opposed to dropping a slider on the outside part of the plate, you'll get a lot of weak pop-ups, strike outs, and/or just plain easy outs.

The slider's a great pitch. Throw it. But be smart with it.

Practice It!
